gorman

Australian label Gorman, brain child of Melbourne designer Lisa Gormon released an organic line in 2007. Gorman organic line is made from certified organic cotton and bamboo grown in Thailand. Gormans have worked hard to craft fabrics and yarns that are soft and modern, not at all the chunky hippy threads you’d expect.

The Gorman’s Organic Basic range includes tees, tanks, pjs, hoodies and underwear.

However, please note a recent walk through Gorman's store revealed no organic items on the shelves (many non-biodegradable, many made in China).Don't buy blindly but do buy her organics when you find them and prove organic ranges are commercially viable for Australian designers.

Green Eye Monster t-shirts are made in Sydney (no homeworkers or sweatshops), as are the fabrics from organic cotton sourced from Australia, Turkey and India.

The dying is chemical but use a method of dilution that complies with oeko-tex.com. This certification checks that chemicals are safe for workers and treated to minimise environemntal impact.

Green Eyed Monster is a socially responsible Australian label that delivers classic designs with a quirky touch. The current collection is a simple, stylish and sustainable range made from 100% certified organic fabrics.

$5 from every online sale of organic products will be donated to Friends of the Earth.

HeartWeave

Sourced from the South of India, Heartweave is certified fairtrade and organic textile standards with no child labour involved at any stage.

The workshop is also a rehabilitation centre for handicapped/economically disadvantaged women. These women are given training and support along with food and accommodation. Considered by their families to be unfit for marriage the women also receive help towards paying their dowries.

And it's young, simple fun tees and hoodies.

Beware of the 'green wash'. Organic cotton does not maketh organic if it is smothered in toxic dyes and finishes that flow into the rivers of developing countries. An approved chemical dye does not maketh 'green', it just means that it's not toxic.

Organic starts from crops and moves through non-chemical processing. You'd expect it would not be produced undersweatshop conditions and thoughtful with energy. Read the label thoroughly before you buy.
