Reclaimed Fabrics

Recycled Polyester

Textiles made from synthetic fibres can be recycled chemically in a process that involves breaking down the fibre at the molecular level and the re-polymerising. Chemical recycling is more energy intensive mechanical repulling of recycled natural fibres.

The most common recycled synthetic fibre is polyester made from plastic bottles. I am unaware of any company recycling synthetic fabrics (one restyling). Please let me know if you find any such innovators.

Please check out this innovative company to get an idea of the possibilities.

Unifi has successfully created Repreve®, a completely recycled fiber (and also Satura®, a family of solution-dyed yarns that saves 18 gallons of water per pound of yarn produced).

Outdoor clothing company Patagonia has become famous for it’s recycled polyester clothes. They also started the world’s first garment recycling program that encourages customers to bring their used clothing back for recycling.
